Spreading the Sunflowers Over The Seas

The flowers -

They sprout, they bud in the dark of the soil, behind our house, in our backyard.

Every morn, they shone with the sunrise, so soothing to behold.

Mother pours them water, Father tills the soil, more nutrients, more manure!

What I do? I help.

Fetch some stones, play with the dark pallets of the ground until they turn snow. Father declines every time I opt to pluck a leaf

“Not yet, darling. Just a little more time…”

The leaves green, the flowers yellow, the stalks brown, and yet I cannot hold them now?

“But Father, when?”

I ask each time the urge compounds, but same old, same old.

Oh, the wind was merciless,

carrying cherished possessions along with its careless flow.

And among were our groomed sunflowers.

“Father, look, there our sunflowers fly!”

In the wreck of the brutal wind, they soared, almost too heavenly in such a storm.

“But why?”

My heart wrenched

Yet the console of their beauty outmatched my distress.

“Oh, sunflower, how lovely are thy petals on the winds of chaos.

How are you able to swing with the tides –

Gracefully, beautifully, and unbroken?”

Father said, “Because it had waited long for a day as this, to sail the winds free and true.

Here is the plight that takes our sunflowers beyond the shores, to the worlds over the seas.

Daughter, when the time is ripe, so shall you fly

on brutal winds with your wings firm, gliding and dancing.

Sharing your voice, and flying over the unknown seas

Spreading the untapped beauty within,

Just like the sunflowers today…”

Happy Father’s Day!!!
